Cultural (Section 27) Assessments
Cultural assessments provide vital insight into a client’s background, family history, cultural identity, and systemic influences. These reports are often used alongside Alcohol & Drug Assessments to offer a more holistic understanding of the factors contributing to offending behaviours.
Prepared under Section 27 of the Sentencing Act 2002, these assessments assist the court in understanding the social and cultural context of the individual and can positively influence sentencing outcomes.
What the Report Includes
Each cultural report explores:
- Whakapapa, cultural identity, and community influences
- Intergenerational trauma or systemic disadvantage
- Family history, upbringing, and life challenges
- Pathways for support, rehabilitation, and reconnection
These reports are professionally written, legally informed, and respectful of each individual’s lived experience.
Nationwide Availability
We offer Cultural Assessments throughout New Zealand, including all prisons, with remote assessments available by video where appropriate.
Why Combine with Alcohol & Drug Assessments?
When used in conjunction with a substance use report, Cultural Assessments provide a fuller picture of the client’s life story, motivations, and capacity for change. This integrated approach is often more persuasive to the court and more supportive of sentencing that prioritises rehabilitation.
Cultural Assessments can be an added as a supplement with each funded Alcohol & Drug Assessment
